Catalan expressions: the short & sweet

You may or may not know that people in Catalonia speak two languages: Catalan and Spanish. If you’re travelling outside the big cities, especially in rural environments like ours, people will be delighted if you attempt some words in Catalan. I was going to write a post about some basic expressions to help you get around while you are here, but Maria does it so much better in these videos. Here is a selection to get you started!

Greetings

They say you can travel anywhere as long as you know how to say “hello” “please” and “thank you”.

Thank you!

If you speak some French, you’ll be surprised at some of the similarities between the two languages.

Surviving in a restaurant

Once you get outside the big cities, you might find it harder to find waiters who speak English. Have a look too at our other post on menus of the day.

Simple chat

It’s all very well saying hello but wouldn’t it be nice to add some simple sentences saying where you’re from and other chit-chat. This video will help.

Thank you Maria!

Maria has some great videos on her YouTube channel, Learn Catalan from Barcelona, if you want to discover more about the Catalan language and culture, because, yes, language and culture are intertwined.
